    Liquid Chillers

Refrigeration faults that occur in chilled water plants are very similar to those faults that occur in direct expansion systems (see pages 53 to 190 of this manual). However, in order to help you transfer your knowledge of direct expansion systems to chilled water systems, we will review a few of the most common problems encountered.  Let us start by looking once more at the usual operating parameters for an R22 installation.

EXERCISE : The chilled water plant below, fitted with a circulating water condenser, has just been commissioned by the manufacturer's installation department.

The water inlet temperatures of the evaporator and condenser are:

27°C for the condenser water inlet.

 12°C at the evaporator chilled water inlet.

  1. With everything operating normally, indicate the inlet and outlet of each heat exchanger. Fill in the missing temperature values.

  2. What are the normal superheat and sub-cooling values?

  3. The following is written on the chilled water unit: R22 70 kW. Estimate the water flow rates through the evaporator and condenser.
